PET/CT & Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is a form of malignant (cancerous) tumor that can arise within a variety of different cells in the female ovaries: the female reproductive and hormone-producing organs found on each side of the uterus

There are three types of cancers that can affect the ovaries. The three types of ovarian cancer are:

• Epithelial carcinoma

This is the most common kind of ovarian tumor, starting in the epithelial cells that are found in the outer layer of cells in the ovaries.

• Germ cell cancer

Germ cell cancers are tumours that start in the cells that form eggs in the ovary. This is quite a rare ovarian cancer.

• Stromal cell cancer

Stromal cell cancers start in the stromal cells of the ovaries: cells form the tissue that holds the ovaries together.
