Gathering the Data
In order to produce the 3 dimensional images that are so effective in the medical
world, especially the fight against cancer, that is the predominant use of the
PET/CT scanner the PET/CT scanner must acquire both anatomical data (from the
CT scanner) and Metabolic data (from the PET scanner)
Because the two types of scanners (Positron Emission Tomography and Computed
Tomography) that make up the PET/CT scanner are so different in how they image
the body, and what they are used for, they both use completely different techniques
to capture the data needed to produce the images that can then be interpreted.
Below are the two ways in which the PET/CT scanner captures the anatomical
data and metabolic data:
