If you have a suspicious mole, you will need to have tests performed to find out if it is a malignant cancer. This usually involves having a biopsy where a doctor will take some of the cells to have them looked at under a microscope.

Although melanomas are often completely treatable, some melanomas can spread quickly. This is very dangerous and a person could end up with cancer in the lymph nodes, lungs, brain, or other places, while the original skin melanoma is still small.

Melanoma that has spread to other parts of the body may not be found until long after the first melanoma was removed from the skin. This is where a PET/CT scan can be of extreme use. A PET/CT scan can be used to check and see if the original cancer has spread as a PET/CT scan can accurately detect melanoma skin cancer.
