Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive imaging technique that provides important information about the internal structures of the body. This technology is still in its infancy. Although it has been in widespread use for almost 20 years but as compared to other imaging techniques, MRI has much more to offer.
Future of magnetic resonance imaging is yet to unfold different technologies. Nowadays, small scanners for imaging specific body parts are being developed. For example, a scanner that you simply place your arm, knee or foot in is currently being used in some areas. A constant improvement has been observed in the technique to visualize the arterial and venous system.
For understanding how the brain works, Functional brain mapping is the technique being adopted. This is the process of scanning a person’s brain while he/she is performing a physical task such as squeezing a ball, or looking at a particular type of image.
At the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Institutes of Health, researchers are working on MRI technology to colorize MRI images, through the use of special micromagnets. According to the researchers, the smart tag" technology can improve diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These micro-magnets rely on a precisely tunable feature to adjust the radio-frequency (RF) signals used to create images. The micromagnets can also be thought of as microscopic RF identification (RFID) tags. The device concept is flexible and can be further extended to other applications such as in enabling RFID-based microscopic fluid devices for biotechnology and handheld medical diagnostic toolkits.
However, the microtags need extensive engineering and testing, including clinical studies, before they are used on patients undergoing MRI exams.
MRI is a field that promises limitless future, and wide range of applications.
