Osteoporosis

New bone is constantly being produced in the body to replace old or worn-down bone. Ideally, bone is being produced and removed at the same rate. In osteoporosis, however, old bone is being removed at a faster rate than new bone is being produced. As a result, the bones thin, weaken and are left at an increased risk of fracture. Osteoporosis can occur because of disease, hormonal changes, lack of calcium in the diet, or simply age.

A CT spine scan is useful in determining the osteoporosis’ patient’s bone density. Bone density is a good indicator of the risk of bone fracture.
