Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus is an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid has many important functions in the body, including cushioning and protecting the brain and the spinal cord. However, in hydrocephalus, the CSF builds up faster than it can be absorbed by the body. As the CSF accumulates in the ventricles, it enlarges them and puts pressure against the head. Hydrocephalus is a congenital condition (that is, the patient is born with it) and there is no known cure. Surgical procedures can help treat it. A CT scan can help doctors determine which surgical procedure is best.
